Habits are not easy to give up; choose yours wisely
शमथ। Samatha
Make a habit and it stays with you even after you leave this body. Once a habit is formed, it takes consistent effort over a long period of time to erase it from your subconscious memory. Even a single moment of doubt will make the effort invalid as your subconscious mind does not function according to your justifications.
Trying to reason with the subconscious mind is similar to reasoning with a Bluetooth speaker to let you listen to a particular song when it is not paired with the device on which the song is stored. There is no place for ifs and buts in your subconscious register. It is simply incapable of understanding your strengths and weaknesses. But it responds well to commands, but commands should be crisp and clear. In short, there is no point in feeding a big story to the subconscious mind. Stick to clear commands with regular reinforcements. In ordinary terms, this is called willpower.
Willpower should not be a product of egoistic pride or altruistic pride but based on the firm understanding of what is good or you. You must have the willingness to align your understanding with Wisdom and not with your whimsical thoughts. This is how you clear a habit or form a habit. Your actions are governed by habits, irrespective of whether you like them or not. Your habits are governed by your will.
To have the life you dream of, begin by changing your habits to suit the life you want to have. Ensure that you have the humility not to think that “I know”.
